Turku – city and port in southwestern Finland, the administrative center of the province of Varsinais-Suomi. The city is located at the confluence of the River Aura in the Archipelago Sea.
The city is officially bilingual: Finnish as their primary language used 87.7% of the population; Swedish is the mother tongue for 5.3% (2009).
Turku is considered the gateway to the West, and the European highway E-18 links it with both the St. Petersburg and Stockholm. The city is a major port, carrying freight and passenger traffic to the Åland Islands and Sweden. Turku Airport is the fifth largest and the second cargo in Finland.
