Orchard Road – the street in Singapore, a center of commerce and entertainment, the main tourist attraction. Often, the street and its surroundings is simply called “the Orchard” ( “Orchard”), partly because of the location here of the same name subway station.
Street name, means “The road to orchard,” recalls the middle of the XIX century, when it led the way to the plantations of nutmeg, black pepper and fruit trees. Commercial building streets began in the XX century.
Orchard Road has been known since 1830, although it is not marked on the map of Singapore in 1836 year. In 1830, this area was the site of cultivation Gambir and black pepper. Later, they were replaced by plantations of fruit trees and nutmeg.
