Michalovce – a small town in the east of Slovakia, in the territory of Eastern Slovak Lowland. The first mention of Michalovce comes with 1244 as Michal settlement. In 1867 Michalovce was endowed with city status, and they became a district center. Mihalovets peculiarity is the fact that a quarter of the population are Orthodox and the Uniates.

According to legend, it was the legendary precursor of Mihalovets Svirzhava town on the banks of the river of the same name, where the Hungarians killed Prince Labortsa. In the IX century the area Zemplínska Territory was part of the Great Moravian Empire, the remains of pre-Romanesque rotunda preserved from those times.
