Tartu – the city, the county center in Estonia, on the Emajõgi River, the second largest population after Tallinn.
Tartu is located in 185 km south-east of Tallinn, capital of Estonia. The city is situated on both banks of the Emajõgi 37 km from its confluence with the Peipus-Pskov lake system, the city stretches along the river at 9 km.
The Old Town is the main part of the historical and architectural monuments: the Town Hall (1789) in the style of early classicism, houses, church Jaan (XIV century), the main building of the University (1804-09). On the hill Toomemägi (in the park Toome) ruins of the Dome (Peter and Paul) Cathedral (XIII-XV centuries, the choral part in 1804-07 rebuilt in the university library, the museum now), the old anatomical theater (1803-05) and the Observatory.
