The city of Salgotarjan (Ukr. Salgotarjan, Hun. Salgótarján) is located in Northern Hungary, the administrative center of the County of Nograd. The population of the city’s minority ranks second after szekszárd among the administrative centers of the country.
Salgotarjan is located on the slopes of the North-Eastern part of the mountains of Cserhát, at the foot of mount Karan, in a northerly direction, between two rivers, Tarján and Salgo, surrounded by mountain ranges, Karan – Medves and Cserhát at an altitude of 250 m above sea level. In the North-Eastern direction from the town are the ruins of the fortress of seasoned Salgo.
Name Salgotarjan comes from combining two names, Salga and Tarján. So, Salgo from the name of the neighbouring fortress, the Hungarian word salgó means radiant, brilliant and in this case is an adjective. The word I – Duke, Prince, Viceroy, as historians assume, it was called one of the tribes in the period of gaining the homeland of the Hungarian people.
