Ponta Delgada (Ponta Delgada — the capital of the Azores Islands and the largest island Sao Miguel. One of the oldest cities in the region, it was founded in 1449 At the time its port was considered not only the largest in the Azores, but also exceptionally rich.
The “Golden age” took place in the 19th century, when thanks to the export of citrus in Ponta Delgada greatly increased population, built up numerous houses, temples and villas. Today, of course, the glory of the town faded somewhat, but plenty of historical buildings and churches, preserved from those times, still attract the attention of curious tourists.
The centre of Ponta Delgada is divided into three large districts — San Pedro (in honor of St. Peter), Sao Sebastiao and Sao Jose. The most touristic of them — the last San Jose. It is here that the most developed infrastructure, more hotels, restaurants and attractions.
