The shores of both bays are connected by several bridges. The most famous is the bridge of Auckland (Auckland Harbour Bridge), crossing of the Waitemata in the Western part of the Central business district of Auckland. In the southern part of the city of Manukau bridge spans the Bay. This bridge is a road connecting Central part of the city with the International Airport of Auckland.
Several Islands located in the waters of the Hauraki Gulf, are controlled by the administration of the Central Auckland, although their territory is not included in the territory of greater Auckland. The most densely populated part of the island of Waihiki function practically as a normal urban areas, while numerous small Islands dotted around Auckland are mainly used as nature reserves and recreation areas.
