The island is rocky and separated mostly by narrow Straits. Maximum altitude of 1161 m above sea level. From continental Norway are separated by the Strait of Vestfjorden. Between the Islands of föhr and Moskenes is the famous whirlpool of the Maelstrom.
The archipelago consists of several larger Islands and numerous islets and rocks.
