Hokitika is one of the most charming towns on the West coast of New Zealand. The elegance of the architectural forms of the city’s buildings, the quiet beauty of the cosy downtown streets and ancient artisan workshops attract attention of travelers arriving in this city.
From a small town in the mid 60-ies of the XIX century thanks to transit position on the way miners Hokitika has become a major center of Commerce Golden sand. River port daily took dozens of ships coming from Australian mines, and the holds which were filled with precious metal. Many of them crashed, breaking on coastal reefs at the entrance to the harbour. The remains of lost ships and can be seen today on one of the routes.
