Edinburgh – the capital and second largest city in Scotland, the seventh largest in the UK, the administrative center of the eponymous region.
Located on the east coast of Scotland (area lowlands) on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth. The capital of Scotland since 1437.
The city is the University of Edinburgh – one of the major higher educational institutions. Edinburgh – Old Town and New Town – in 1995 were entered in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The average population in 2014 was 492,680 people.
Edinburgh Castle – ancient fortress on Castle Rock in the center of Scotland’s capital city – Edinburgh. Until recently it was at the disposal of the British Ministry of Defence.
The castle is open for visits and is a major tourist attraction in Edinburgh. To it leads the old main street in Edinburgh – the so-called Royal Mile, at the other end of which is the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
