Cherkasy – the regional center of Cherkassy region of Ukraine. It located approximately 180 kilometers south-east of Kiev, on the right bank of the Dnieper.
The city has a Music and Drama Theatre named after T. Shevchenko, several theaters and regional Philharmonic. At the intersection of the boulevard Shevchenko and st. Mozhaiskogo begins a beautiful park, a monument of landscape architecture, called “Park 50-th anniversary of October”. Located on the banks of the Dnieper River park in an area of 49 hectares. In Cherkassy is a unique monument of architecture – one of the world’s first hyperboloid structures – steel openwork water tower of great beauty.
The origin of the place name “Cherkasy” and its true etymology remained unsolved until now. The town’s name is directly related to the ethnonym Cherkasy – so called Cossacks Tatars.
