Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with a population of approximately 1.3 million people, despite the fact that the entire population is about 4.1 million. The area of greater Auckland, is the largest urbanized area in New Zealand. Geographically and administratively part of greater Auckland includes Auckland city Central and most urbanized part of the city, North shore city , Manukau city , Waitakere city and the urbanized part of the district of Papakura , Rodney and Franklin.
Auckland is on an isthmus width of less than 2 kilometers at the narrowest point between the Gulf of Mangeri from the Tasman sea and the Tamaki river from the Pacific ocean. This isthmus within urbanized areas washed by the waters of the two bays. Bay Waitemata is in the North, in the Eastern part it adjoins the Hauraki Gulf. The southern coast of the isthmus is bordered by the Bay of Manukau, which is through a narrow Strait in the Western part is connected to the Tasman sea.
