Aarau – a city in northern Switzerland, the Aare River, the administrative center of the canton of Aargau. Located at an altitude of 368 m above sea level.
Aarau is situated on the southern slopes at the foot of the Jura in the center of the triangle, which constitute the large cities of Zurich, Basel and Lucerne. The central location was noted as far back as ancient times – which is why for several months in 1798 Aarau was the first capital of Switzerland and is the first parliament building.
The many painted eaves, still called “dahimmel” mostly created in the XVI century, when the city has increased significantly in size – a landmark of the Old Town of Aarau.
Aarau continues to show attention to the arts: Aargau Art Museum designed by the famous architects Herzog & de Meuron office – there are exhibitions of architecture and painting at a very high level. «Naturama» – Aargau Natural History Museum, this is not the ordinary museum that you can imagine: animals, plants, incredible movies, interactive displays and even here represented human conflict areas with nature in the Aargau.
