Hanoi — capital of Vietnam and the second by population city in the country. In 2010 the city celebrated its 1000 years.
The area around Hanoi on the beautiful shores of the red river already inhabited at least five thousand years. In the XV century, Vietnam was captured by the Chinese in the XIX – the French, and all the colonialists have left here their traces. After the 1950s, the French were expelled, Hanoi became the capital of North Vietnam, in the 1970s, the Americans left South Vietnam after violence and bitter struggle, and Hanoi became the capital of the whole country.
Being the most powerful city-States during the last Millennium, Hanoi has become a cultural center of Vietnam, where each of the dynasties that ruled here have left behind their monuments and temples. The character of modern Hanoi formed the first French-colonial style architecture visible everywhere. Note the Opera house with a huge colonnade, the building of the Vietnam state Bank, St. Joseph, Presidential Palace, Hanoi University, the hotel Sofitel Metropole and elegant boulevards.
